Brennan Center for Justice

The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law is a non-partisan public policy and law institute that focuses on the fundamental issues of democracy and justice.

The Brennan Center has published a series of reports and studies concerning voting rights and voter ID:

Election Protection

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is the lead partner of the non-partisan Election Protection coalition, of which VoteRiders is also a partner.  It was formed to ensure that all voters have an equal opportunity to participate in the political process.

The coalition features state-of-the-art hotlines: 1-866-OUR-VOTE (866ourvote.org), administered by the Lawyers’ Committee, and 1-888-Ve-Y-Vota (http://veyvota.yaeshora.info/), administered by the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Education Fund.  These and other coalition resources provide comprehensive voter information and advice on how citizens can make sure their vote is counted.

The Election Protection coalition has also created a smartphone app in English and Spanish that provides information and resources needed by voters to fully participate in the 2012 elections.  Click here to download the app.

Got ID?

Demos, Common Cause, the Fair Elections Legal Network and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law partnered to produce Got ID? Helping Americans Get Voter Identification in April 2012.  This document provides best practice guidelines on how to create a coalition of organizations, how to identify citizens who need help, and how to help them obtain required documents (e.g., birth certificates).

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL)

The NCSL compiles comprehensive information including a map of Voter Identification Requirements for each state.  Click here to see if your state has a voter ID law, and if so, the requirements of the law.

Pennsylvania Voter Coalition

The Pennsylvania Voter Coalition is a non-partisan organization created by Philadelphia’s Committee of Seventy to educate and assist voters throughout the state about Pennsylvania’s voter ID law and its requirements.  There are 176 groups (and growing!) that are members of the Coalition.  Coalition members are engaged in education, speaker trainings, voter ID fairs, door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, legal clinics and transportation as well as voter registration.

For information on voter ID events throughout Philadelphia and surrounding areas scroll to the bottom of the Coalition’s webpage to view their event calendar.
